New super batteries could charge phones in seconds and electric cars in minutes

America’s Most Stressed—and Most Chill—Cities

You know the feeling: You’re totally wiped out from the week … but it’s only Tuesday. You can’t sleep. Your palms sweat, and your heart races. You ‘re concerned about everything. You spend disturbing amounts of your paycheck on shrinks, Zen sand gardens, squeezy anxiety balls, and books with titles like “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.”

You, my friend, are stressed out.

There’s so much to agonize over these days: job, family, money, real estate shortages, freaky presidential campaigns, an excruciatingly late 2017 starting date for the next season of “Game of Thrones.” It’s no wonder that last year, 1 in 4 Americans reported that they were highly stressed, according to the American Psychological Association. And stress, medical experts agree, is not our friend. It can make us fat, make us depressed, weaken our immune systems, and even trigger heart attacks and strokes. (Sorry, are we stressing you out?)

Where you live can have a major effect on your stress level. In many of the nation’s most desirable and expensive cities, rent eats up a disproportionately large chunk of your income, leading to money worries and despair over the prospect of ever saving up for a down payment on a home. And that’s if you even have a secure job—no sure thing in the more economically distressed metro areas.

“Each city shares some common causes for stress, like noise, people, competition, traffic, but they also diverge into their own special pain points,” says self-described “stress coach” Jordan Friedman in New York City, author of “The Stress Manager’s Manual.”

So which cities are sending their residents’ collective anxiety to pandemic levels?  Our remarkably chill data team pulled together a list of 11 metrics that we think give a pretty good indication:

  • Housing affordability, signaled by price-to-income ratio
  • Rent
  • Average hours of sleep
  • Average work hours
  • Percentage of people who commute more than 45 minutes to work
  • Unemployment rate
  • Percentage of people who live below the poverty line
  • Divorce rate
  • Number of yoga and meditation centers per capita
  • Percentage of people in “poor” or “fair” health (46% of Americans cite health concerns as a leading cause of stress)
  • Percentage of people who don’t think “having as much fun as possible” is important, according to a 2016 Nielsen poll.

As our data reveal, some of the United States’ most stressed-out cities are indeed famously anxiety-prone—New York, we’re looking at you!—but others are closet stress cases. And keep reading for our list of America’s most relaxed metros!

1. Los Angeles, CA

Median home price: $673,000

Living in a city notorious for having the nation’s—if not the planet’s—worst commute, Angelenos start off their day with a soul-crushing slog to work, bathed in the exhaust fumes of other unhappy workers’ vehicles.

“When it takes you an hour to drive 7 or 8 miles, it certainly creates lots of stress,” says Beverly Hills-based psychotherapist Tracey Harvey. “One thing I usually suggest is when you see a red traffic light, use it as a moment to stop all thoughts. Don’t check text messages, just breathe and relax.” (Easier said than done, Tracey!)

Home prices in Los Angeles are soaring, but incomes still haven’t fully recovered from the mass exodus of manufacturing jobs from the 1970s through the ’90s. With a median household income of a little over $60,000, millions of Angelenos can barely afford to be Angelenos.

Extra stress point: L.A. has the worst air pollution of any large American metro. Enjoy!

2. Riverside, CA

Median home price: $350,000

Seven years after the recession, the economy of Riverside—an hour east of eastern L.A., but in a different world, known as the Inland Empire—remains in a state of prolonged recovery. The city is plagued both by high unemployment (6.6%) and by high poverty rates (18%). Ashley Furniture HomeStore recently announced it was shutting down two plants in nearby Colton, eliminating 840 jobs in the state.

Extra stress point: Put aside some cash for a ready supply of Brita: The metro’s tap water ranks second-highest in the U.S. for chemicals and pollutants.

3. Miami, FL

Median home price: $349,000

OK, this one surprised you, right? Turns out sunshine and beaches aren’t the answer to everything. In fact, an endless cycle of too little leisure time and chronic sleep deprivation help contribute to the city’s abnormally high 12.8% divorce rate.

Another unexpected factor: prosperity! Florida’s economy and housing market are recovering after being hit hard by the housing collapse in 2008 and subsequent recession, but somehow, more and more married couples now feel financially secure enough to split up, according to divorce lawyer Ronald Kauffman. “The fear that they will be penniless and homeless after a divorce is largely gone,” Kauffman says.

Extra stress point: Home buyers face competition not just from their peers, but also from international buyers with deep pockets who swoop in with cash offers.

4. Anchorage, AK

Median home price: $315,000

It may also come as a surprise that Anchorage, with its peaceful backdrop of snowy mountains, low population density, and plentiful caribou burgers, is actually a stressful city. But people in Anchorage log in some of the longest work hours (41.2 hours a week). And they don’t get much sleep after staggering home—just 6.75 hours every night. Matters are probably not helped by those stretches of Alaskan summer when the city gets 20-plus hours of sunlight per day.

Extra stress point: Sarah Palin

5. New York, NY

Median home price: $422,000

There are way too many distractions keeping New Yorkers up at night, with the average city dweller logging just 6.82 hours of sleep per night. Then there are the exorbitant prices of everything, the dog-eat-dog competitiveness, the surly newsstand guys, the pizza rats. Even with the country’s best—if wildly overcrowded—public transit system, one-third of workers have to travel more than 45 minutes to work every day.

So how come New York is not No. 1 on the list? New Yorkers work hard and party hard—nearly half think having “as much fun as possible” is a top priority, according to a recent poll. And did we mention the beautiful people? Beautiful people.

Extra stress point: Envy

6. Houston, TX

Median home price: $315,000

Houston is feeling the pain of the collapse in oil prices—in July, total non-farm employment in the area increased by only 0.4% compared to last year, the lowest among major U.S. metros, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. If traffic congestion, angry commuters, and long work schedules were less of a problem during the city’s economic boom, they are now causing stress levels to veer into the danger zone.

Extra stress point: Home to deadly mosquito-borne viruses

7. New Orleans, LA

Median home price: $250,000

Life isn’t really all that easy in New Orleans, despite its nickname of “the Big Easy,” Almost 1 in 5 families struggles below the poverty line, and a 6.2% unemployment rate doesn’t promise a better future. The city’s high crime—a 15% jump in the violent crime rate since 2010—certainly doesn’t help ease nerves, either. The Washington Post reported that the ranks of police in New Orleans have dwindled by 24% since Hurricane Katrina.

Extra stress point: The summer humidity is so high that makeup literally melts off women’s faces.

8. Lafayette, LA

Median home price: $218,000

This metro in southern Louisiana relies heavily on the oil industry, and has some of the nation’s hardest-working people: They work 41.2 hours a week, 7% longer than the national average. Not surprising when you consider that many oil jobs require workweeks of upwards of 80 hours in the oilfields. But low oil prices have brought the city into an economic slump, and left it with unemployment of a whopping 7.6%.

Extra stress point: Not a big emphasis here on de-stressing. The city only has 15 yoga or meditation centers, way below the national average.

9. Phoenix, AZ

Median home price: $300,000

Like other cities on the list, Phoenix has its share of stress due to long work hours, frustrating commutes, and a high divorce rate. And forget about humidity, let’s just focus on the heat: Last summer, the temperature in Phoenix reached a groundbreaking 118 degrees.

Extra stress point: “Heat waves can lead to hot tempers. The heat can really get you, and you are more likely to get angry. That creates problems in life and in relationships,” says life coach Cindy Holbrook.

10. Sacramento, CA

Median home price: $427,000

The last recession hit hard in Sacramento—the capital of California, where the economy relies heavily on government and construction gigs. Jobs slowly flowed back to the region after the recession, but the 5.5% unemployment rate is still higher than the national average.

Extra stress point: Home prices skyrocketed 19% in the past year, and high rents outpace the income recovery.

Jailhouse Informant Claims Missing Teen Brittanee Drexel Was Shot And Possibly Dumped In An Alligator Pit




Seventeen-year-old Brittanee Drexel vanished into thin-air while in Myrtle Beach in 2009, where she had gone for spring break without her parents’ permission. Surveillance video from a hotel lobby was the last known visual clue to the teen’s whereabouts. Investigators traced the girl’s cell signal to a tower near McClellanville, in Georgetown County, South Carolina.


Brittanee Drexel’s Last Words To Mom Before 2009 Disappearance: ‘I’ll See You Later, I Love You’


Seven years went by with no new information released, until FBI Agent Gerrick Munoz testified in federal court that a jailhouse informant, Taquan Brown, had come forward and was making allegations against, among others, a local South Carolina man named Timothy Da’Shaun Taylor. Munoz testified during an unrelated bond hearing for Da’Shaun Taylor in connection with a 2011 robbery.


In the video above, watch Dr. Phil’s exclusive interview with Brittanee’s mother, Dawn Drexel. Dawn relates what she says the FBI agent told her about what Brown claims he saw at a “stash house” in McClellanville, about 50 miles south of where Brittanee was last seen.


“He had said that Da’Shaun – and there were other men – that were raping my daughter,” states Dawn.


“Brittanee tried to escape,” Dawn continues. “Supposedly, they ran out and got her. They brought her back into the house. They pistol-whipped her, and then they shot her.”

Megan Alexander is a national news correspondent with CBS Television and the author of Faith in the Spotlight: Thriving in Your Career While Staying True to Your Beliefs (Simon & Schuster, 2016). For the past two seasons, she covered Thursday Night Football as a special correspondent for CBS News. She has covered the last six Super Bowls, major awards shows and national political events. She serves as a guest commentator on the Wendy Williams Show and Showbiz Tonight on HLN.

Megan regularly speaks to groups and conferences - She was the keynote speaker for the Penn State Business College conference "Powerful Women Paving the Way". She sits on the board of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY). She is an Executive Producer and Actor in the upcoming feature film "Heartbeats." She splits her time between New York City and Nashville, TN. Megan and her husband are the proud parents of two sons.

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
My parents raised me with a strong work ethic. They were constantly challenging me to be better than I was. A pivotal moment for me was when I told my Dad I wanted to run for student council treasurer in high school. He said, "Well, that's great Meg, but what about president?" I simply had not aimed that high. After he suggested this I said, "Why not? Why not me?" I ran and I won. This mindset has helped me countless times in my career. When applying for jobs, assignments or promotions, I hear my Dad telling me to dream bigger. This was also important because I had ZERO friends in the business. My father worked in finance and my mother worked in education. When I told them I wanted to pursue a career in media and entertainment, they were very supportive but candidly told me, "We know nothing about that business, so you are on your own." This was a blessing in disguise because I've earned everything I've achieved and learned I would need to prove myself at every turn. This was empowering! I very much choose this career for myself.

How has your previous employment experience aided your tenure at CBS?
Every single job prepares you for the next - there is always something to be learned or gleaned, even if it seems unimportant in the moment. When giving a report for Inside Edition or for Thursday Night Football, I still think about one of my first internships. I was a junior in college and it was the night of the presidential election. I got to shadow a local news reporter for KEY2 News in Santa Barbara. The reporter was so kind to chat with me about the local scene he was covering. I remember him saying, "Be colorful, show your surroundings, and let people INTO the story with you." He did a good job walking and being interactive with people during his news reports. This is very much the style of Inside Edition reporting, so I still use his advice today. Listening and observing is one of the greatest ways to learn in our business. I had several radio jobs before I worked in television, and radio helped develop my voice and presentation of a story. My time co-hosting the morning show "Great Day SA" at the local CBS affiliate in San Antonio was a huge learning experience because our boss hated to script things. He liked us to be extemporaneous and adlib as much as possible on-air. But in order to make that look easy and natural, we had to research and be as prepared as possible. At the time, this format made me nervous, but I learned so much. I learned not to rely on a script or teleprompter, which comes in handy when the teleprompter locks up. It has happened several times to me during live shows!

What have the highlights and challenges been during your position at CBS?
To my knowledge, I am the only reporter to have swam with tigers, ligers and orangutans! I did this at the TIGERS Reserve in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I've also swam with elephants and kissed Seahawks. I have covered 6 Super Bowls for Inside Edition. Each one is an incredible but very intense week-long assignment.

My first Thursday Night Football game was on September 11th, 2014. The game was the Ravens vs the Redskins and the Ray Rice scandal was breaking news all night long. Information and changes to the pre-show were coming in fast and furious. I delivered reports for every single CBS affiliate across the country and was literally on-air for 4 hours straight. It was a sink or swim situation, and my team was determined to swim. I was very proud of the way CBS handled that game by taking on a more serious tone to cover the situation. It was a moment when news and sports aligned, and it was our job to piece it all together for the public. That's when this job is really satisfying - when we can gather information on a difficult story and deliver it to our audience in real time. And as a female, I was very proud to be covering sports that night. Thursday Night Football has been an awesome assignment for me. Americans love their football!

What advice can you offer to women who want a career in your industry?
Don't worry so much about proving yourself as a female, worry about proving yourself as a professional. Hard work and excellence speak for themselves. Come in early and stay late. Be hungry to learn. Observe. Ask questions. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and move for a job in this industry. I have worked all over the country - Seattle, Santa Barbara, Nashville, San Antonio and now New York City. Each move was a stepping stone.

What is the most important lesson you've learned in your career to date?
When you travel, never, EVER check a bag! I don't. For the past 5 years, I only travel with a carry-on. Even if I am covering a red carpet or fancy event, I can pack everything I need in a carry-on. Learn to live and work light - it will save you time, energy and money, and you'll gain street cred with those you work with.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I'm not sure I do. It's a constant struggle. I love working and am blessed to have married a man who believes in me and my career goals. We are teammates and treat our family as a team. I am trying to raise my sons, who are 1 and 5-years-old, respectively, to think this way. I want my boys to see a Mom who divides chores with her husband. When I fly out of town one week, he is the stay at home parent. When he has a big conference coming up, I jump in. We try to split everything 50-50. We are constantly juggling to do this. But every now and then we look at each other and say, "Wow, when is the last time we took a vacation?!" So we try and plan ahead a little. I think it's very important to give yourself a break and say, "Hey, I may not have perfect work/life balance and that's ok. Sometimes I will be hyper-focused on work for a month or two, and sometimes I will have quality family time." I am OK with that. It's my happy chaos. Every woman and couple needs to figure it out for themselves and do what feels like a good balance to them.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?
Confidence. We need women to simply believe they CAN get that promotion or be the boss while having kids and a family. I want to see more women just go for it and figure out the logistics later. Guys think more this way. I have a small group of friends in NYC and we are constantly telling each other, "Dream bigger! You need to aim higher!" I want to see women go for what they want and believe they can.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life?
I have always tried to seek out someone a few years older than me to look up to. I did this in high school and in college, and I still do this in work and in my church. It's not always a formal mentorship where we meet regularly. It could be as simple as catching someone in the office hallway and quickly asking them for advice. I try to be intentional about this and make the most of my time with people I admire. When I first got to Inside Edition, I was engaged and about to get married. I passed Deborah Norville, the anchor of Inside Edition, in the hallway and she wished me well for my upcoming wedding. I asked her what the secret to a long marriage was - she has been married over 20 years - and we had a great but quick chat. And personally, my neighbor is a wonderful woman who has raised a great son and I try to pick her brain about raising boys whenever I can!

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?
Condoleezza Rice because she is smart, passionate, eloquent, and from everything I have read about her, the master at multi-tasking. And talk about determined and disciplined. I remember reading how, while serving as Secretary of State under the Bush administration and negotiating international deals, she also worked out every morning at 4am and found time to keep up her classical piano! I also admire Brené Brown, Oprah, Sara Blakely and Roma Downey. There are so many incredible female leaders right now!

What do you want to accomplish in the next year?
I just finished writing my first book called "Faith in the Spotlight!" It was a two year process - long, but very fulfilling. My goal in the next year is to speak to as many young girls as possible and encourage them to dream bigger. I'd also like to run a half-marathon and take a nice long family vacation!
